After supplying foldable OLED displays to Samsung's mobile division and other foldable phone OEMs overseas for years, Samsung Display finally bagged Apple as a foldable display client. Apple's first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, features OLED panels made by Samsung Display.
If you've seen recent iPhone Duo reports about the foldable screen cracking and breaking, you might be tempted to blame Samsung. After all, Samsung is Apple's sole foldable OLED supplier. However, if you were to blame Samsung, you'd be wrong.
In reality, Samsung has nothing to do with Apple's current problems. In fact, you could argue that if Apple had learned more from Samsung, the iPhone Duo probably wouldn't have had as many issues as it does right now.
What Samsung does and doesn't make
Samsung apparently manufactures only the foldable OLED layer in Apple's 10-layer foldable display. It's not responsible for the entire assembly, only the most important and difficult part.
Second, the iPhone Duo's foldable display seemingly cracks from a hinge issue rather than an inherent display manufacturing error. The foldable screen breaks from the inside, but even so, the hinge manufacturer, Fine M-Tec, claims the fault lies elsewhere.
The latter denied blame for the foldable screen's failure (via Apple Insider). Which probably means something must've gone wrong elsewhere along Apple's supply and assembly line.
Lastly, if you needed any more evidence that Samsung has nothing to do with Apple's failures, look at the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which is somehow lighter, thinner, and more resilient.
The latter is Samsung's passport-style phone and the iPhone Duo's direct rival. Many already consider it a better phone, but more importantly, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 doesn't suffer from any of the iPhone Duo's display issues, even though Samsung Display supplies the foldable OLED panel for both.
Whatever is causing the iPhone Duo's screen to fail doesn't seem to have anything to do with Samsung. It's either Apple's design, one of Apple's supplier, Foxconn's assembly, or something else entirely.
